So, choosing wrong type iron may result in badly ironed clothes. It also may take longer time than usual time. Also, if you sew regularly, you may have to spend more time on the ironing board. So, any unwise use of the ironing board may result in stain or snip.
So, using an ironing board cover helps you a lot to wash and remove the eyesore stain. It saves your bucks from buying a new cover for each season. Also, sewing an ironing board cover isn’t so tough but tricky. It helps you to disguise future scorches and marks. Also, you can use classic colors and patterns as well as decorative designs to look attractive.
So, follow the below steps to make an ironing board and save your time and money.
Required Materials
- Cotton fabric (1.5 yards minimum): any sort of cotton fabric is better than synthetics. It won’t trap the moisture of the steam from the cloths and the iron. So, you can use weight cotton, heavier cotton or upholstery cotton depending upon your preferences.
- Double Fold Bias Tape (2 Packages/ 6 Yards): You need an extra wide double bias folding tape to fit around the surrounding s of the ironing board. However, you can make the bias tape at home instead of buying from the store. So, when you make it at home, keep the finished width of at least ½ inch so that the strips can have wide enough to start.
- Drawstring Cord with a Plastic Stopper (3-4 Yards)
- Sewing machine
- Thread
- an iron machine
- A writing utensil or pencil
- A pin
How to Make an Ironing Board Cover At Home
So, it’s time to start the steps for creating an excellent board cover. Don’t skip any step to get a well-finished ironing board cover. However, the following steps are described by considering to make a new board cover.
Choose Fabric and create Pattern
At first, open the ironing board and turn them upside down. Then lay on the back side of the fabric so that you can make a mark of the board. Take a pencil and create a 2 ½-inch dashed line around the perimeter of the ironing board. After drawing the dashed line, join them and make a line which will be your cutting line.
Cut Fabric and baste the stitch
Take the cotton cloth and cut along to the line. When cutting the fabric, start from the top of the fleece. However, if you use a fabric template, cut out the fleece along to the template size. When you cut the fabric, it’s time to baste the stitch of the fleece of the back side of the fabric.
Mark Middle
Hope, you successfully cut the front side and baste the stitch. Now, fold the fabric into half and mark the middle line. Tie them with a pin so that you can mark a line.
Bias Tape and Stitch the Bias
Gather all the pieces and ties with the tape. Then unfold bias tape and stitch the ends of the fabric cover. Here, be careful to stitch the bias tape. At first, line up the open edges of the tape with the edges of the cover. The fleece should be side up here. Also, open just one side of the marked middle line from the pin.
Then curl the edges of the tape and make a finished edge. Start stitching through the line by using the crease closest of the edge of the fabric. Continue the process until all the perimeter is stitched. After completing the edges as well as the perimeter, cut the tape and curl the marked middle line to finish the other edges.
Don’t forget to keep a gap of approximately 1-2 inch between the finished edges.
Stitch Elastic in Bias
Now, fold up the bias tape and curl around the raw edges of the fabric. You have successfully cut and curl the fabric. Now it’s time to sew the fabric cover. Slide the elastic inside the bias tape. Keep the elastic on the top side of the fabric. However, you can sew it easily by keeping the fabric side up on the sewing machine.
Continue sewing to create a tube for the elastic to move in. Make the tube a standard size (not too wide or narrow) so that the elastic can freely move within the bias tape. Continue to stitch all the surroundings of the cover.
Stitching and gathering Elastic
When you stitch through the middle, make a room just short of the marked line. Then pull the elastic slowly so that the edges can’t slip inside the bias tunnel. Gather all the elastic to make the cover perfectly fit. After gathering the elastic, the cover will look like a shrimp. Cut the excess elastic and stitch buttons. The buttons will help to prevent the bias from being loose.
Assemble the Ironing Board Cover
Now, everything is done. Assemble the fabric and cover the ironing board. You can now easily iron the clothes without any hesitation or risk. Enjoy ironing.

- Always use the perfect size cover for an ironing board. Any excess or less cover may lead you to feel uncomfortable while ironing.
- Don’t iron any wet cloths ever. It reduces the durability of the cloth as well as the ironing machine.
- If you use a mesh iron or electric iron, be careful about the electric cord. Always use an authorized fuse to keep the tools and yourself safe.
